A forgotten relic of Utah’s mining past. That’s the Treasure Box Mine. Right here before you lies a testament to a bygone era of industry. The Treasure Box Mine in Salt Lake County. It sits at a lofty 6719 feet. This wasn’t just any mine. It produced lead silver and zinc. The Treasure Box Mining Company was a major player in City Creek Canyon. Its massive dump is a visible reminder of the 10000 feet of underground workings.

For many years the Treasure Box Mine operated sporadically. Two levels were worked. The upper level was initially exploited. Later World War I boosted demand for zinc. Work intensified. Over 9000 tons of high-grade ore was unearthed. A lower tunnel was extended hoping to tap into the same rich vein. Assays revealed impressive results. 29 to 49% zinc and 6 to 19 ounces of silver per ton were found. Some samples even showed over 80% pure lead.

Despite the initial success the high-grade ore vanished by 1919. Stock assessments became frequent. The last mention in the Salt Lake Mining Review was in 1928. Another assessment was announced. Today all that remains are the remnants. A steam engine’s flywheel rests near the creek. The partially collapsed adit leaks water. A steam-driven compressor with cast flywheels stands. Broken walls and scattered debris complete the scene. A 1920s Fordson tractor. A remarkable survivor. Built in Cork Ireland. It sits amongst the ruins. A poignant symbol of the Treasure Box Mine’s legacy. The Treasure Box Mine a forgotten treasure of Salt Lake City.
