“Another temple?” I hear you ask. Let me assure you. Chùa Phước Tường is more than just another temple. It is a journey through time a testament to Vietnamese culture.

Welcome to Chùa Phước Tường. This temple is a national treasure a serene escape from the city’s hustle.

Chùa Phước Tường is a historic landmark. The Ministry of Culture recognized it on July 27 1993. It stands on a large plot of land nearly 30000 square meters. Many old trees offer cool shade. Thiền sư Linh Quang founded it in 1741. He belonged to the Lâm Tế school of Zen Buddhism.

In 1834, the temple was relocated. Từ Minh the fourth abbot oversaw this move. He rebuilt Chùa Phước Tường on a grander scale. This happened during the reign of King Minh Mạng.

Chùa Phước Tường has been renovated several times. These renovations occurred under the Nguyễn Dynasty in the 1930s 1952 and 1991. The temple’s architecture reflects Southern Vietnamese style. Buildings form an L shape with main and secondary axes.

The main axis includes key structures. These are the main hall the ancestral hall and the lecture hall. A meditation courtyard and monks’ quarters are also here. The dining hall marks the end of this axis. The secondary axis features the eastern corridor. This area serves as storage and a kitchen.

The temple’s front hall displays guardian statues. These include Hộ Pháp Kim Cang. Carved panels showcase themes of cranes and pines. A special historical artifact is here. It is a horizontal lacquered board. It reads “Phước Tường Tự” and dates back to 1834 during King Minh Mạng’s rule.

Beyond the front hall lies the main hall. This area houses many ancient Buddha statues. A large carved panel dominates the hall’s center. It depicts the four sacred creatures. These are the dragon the unicorn the turtle and the phoenix. Carved columns stand before the main hall. Golden dragons twist around them. They adorn sơn son thiếp vàng parallel sentences.

Adjacent to the main hall is the Tổ đường. Here sits the ancestral altar. Statues of Tổ sư Đạt Ma are enshrined. Plaques honor past abbots. Altars for nine birthing goddesses are displayed. Locals call them “Mẹ sinh mẹ độ” or “birth-giving protecting mothers”. A wooden “Long giáng” pair also stands here.

Like other Southern temples Chùa Phước Tường follows “Tiền Phật hậu Tổ”. This means “Buddhas in the front ancestors in the back”. The temple features 53 statues and 13 horizontal lacquered boards. Many parallel sentences and carved panels adorn the space.

Statues are made of stone clay and especially wood. Some wooden statues date back to the early 19th century. These reflect a raw style. They are valuable antiques hundreds of years old. Many văn hay parallel sentences are beautifully written. Intricate carvings shine with sơn son thiếp vàng.

Chùa Phước Tường remains a significant site. It represents Vietnamese art architecture and Buddhism. Its history spans centuries. The temple preserves cultural heritage. It provides a peaceful retreat. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Reflect on its rich past. Chùa Phước Tường offers a unique spiritual experience.
