In the early 1980s, performance art boomed in West Berlin. Scheinbar Varieté opened in 1984. Berlin’s school for the performing arts founded it. The open stage concept quickly earned a fan base. Each act had seven minutes to impress. Comedy veterans and newcomers honed their skills. A different presenter led each week. The audience, especially those in the front rows, often joined the act. This spontaneity makes each Scheinbar Varieté performance unique.
