Given its proximity to bustling Seoul subway lines and major roads, the architects at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) faced a significant challenge. They brilliantly crafted a space where the melodies of music and the spoken word remain undisturbed by the city’s symphony of sounds. SOM also engineered the building’s unique structural system. It combines braced frames and a perimeter moment frame, a testament to their innovative approach to design and construction. The GS Tower, formerly known as LG Kangnam Tower, started as just a concept in 1994. Construction began in December of that year and continued until September 1999, when this architectural marvel finally opened its doors.
