The Higher Education Mega Center South, also known as Guangzhou University Town, isn’t just a collection of buildings. It’s a vibrant ecosystem of universities, a melting pot of minds spread across Xiaoguwei Island. This 17.9 square kilometer island pulsates with the energy of institutions like Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology. Imagine a space large enough to hold 350,000 to 400,000 people. That’s the scale we’re talking about. It’s a city within a city, complete with cafes, restaurants, shops, and even live music venues. The Higher Education Mega Center South began as a vision in 2003, officially opening its doors to eager students in 2004. Ten universities initially made this island their new home. Since then, the dream has expanded. Three more universities have joined the ranks, settling in the “South Bank of Guangzhou International Innovation City”, also known as “University City Phase II”.
