“A mirror and a plum tree”. That is an unusual beginning to the story of a Shinto shrine isn’t it? Yet it lies at the heart of the founding legend of the Ōmiya Shrine.

Welcome to Ōmiya Shrine in Osaka. This shrine has a history stretching back centuries. It is a place of peace and reflection in a busy city.

Let me tell you about its origins. Back in 1185 Minamoto no Yoshitsune was in this very area. He was in the midst of pursuing the Taira clan. Stopping here for the night Yoshitsune had a dream. In it he saw the deity Hachiman. When he awoke he noticed a mirror hanging from a plum tree. Yoshitsune believed this to be a sign. He believed it showed he had the favor of the god of war. The mirror became a symbol of protection. Yoshitsune then dedicated it to Hachiman. He went on to defeat the Taira clan.

Afterward Yoshitsune told Emperor Go-Shirakawa about his dream. He also told him about the mirror. The Emperor authorized the construction of a shrine. And so Ōmiya Hachiman-gū was built on this site. It was dedicated to Hachiman.

Over the centuries Ōmiya Shrine became important to Osaka. In 1583 Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle. Ōmiya Shrine became the guardian shrine of the castle’s demon gate. This ensured protection from evil spirits. Hideyoshi supported the shrine greatly improving it.

During the Edo period Ōmiya Shrine continued to be revered. Whenever there was a change of castellan at Osaka Castle people visited the shrine to pay their respects. Each year offerings were made hoping for continued divine favor.

In the late Meiji era the shrine was expanded. Fifteen local shrines were consolidated here. This increased the number of deities worshiped at Ōmiya Shrine. In 1912 the shrine’s name changed to Ōmiya Shrine. The old sign was removed. It is now kept in the shrine’s treasure house.

More recently in 2020 a statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi was found. It was discovered during restoration work. The statue dates back to the mid-17th century. Today it is recognized as an important cultural property.

Ōmiya Shrine hosts several festivals each year. The Ōmiya Ebisu Festival in January is very popular. Summer and autumn festivals also take place in July and October. These events bring the community together. They celebrate the shrine’s history and traditions.

Ōmiya Shrine continues to be a vital part of Osaka. It is a place of worship, history, and community. As you stand here take a moment to appreciate its rich heritage. Consider the story of Yoshitsune, the mirror, and the plum tree. Think about Hideyoshi and his protection of Osaka Castle. Remember the many deities enshrined here. Ōmiya Shrine is a place where the past and present meet.
