What inspires a sculptor to use salt as their medium? Here at the Monumento al Dakar, we find a testament to artistic vision. This monument isn’t just a tribute to the Dakar Rally, a world-famous race that once crossed this landscape. It’s a creation born from the very salt that defines this region. Nicodemo Chambi, a local sculptor, is the artist behind this impressive work. Imagine, using the abundant salt of Salar de Uyuni to craft lasting tributes. Chambi, along with a collective of 25 sculptors, has graced the Salar with other impressive sculptures. Among them are a replica of the iconic Casa Nacional de la Moneda and a scaled-down version of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Their dedication to their craft is clear. They skillfully shape the salt into these captivating forms, showcasing their deep connection to the land. Their art, stark yet captivating against the dazzling white expanse, draws visitors from around the globe.
