Lost in thought, Edith, wife of Robert D’Oiley, often strolled by the river. This is the tale of Osney Mill. She often wondered about magpies chattering in a tree. Her confessor told her the birds were souls in purgatory. They sought her help. Edith and Robert then founded Osney Abbey here in 1129.

Osney Mill stands on the site of that very abbey. Today, we see a modern apartment building. It incorporates the mill’s exterior walls. But let’s journey back. The abbey dominated this area for centuries. It rivaled Oxford’s grandest colleges in size and beauty.

Imagine the scene. Kings, prelates, and nobles visited its great hall. The church boasted ornate decorations. Its pillars were elegant. Statues adorned each one. People believed donations earned forgiveness. Osney Abbey became the envy of all.

The abbey’s wealth came from river trade. In 1227, workers dug the Osney Cut. It became the main river channel. This boosted the abbey’s prosperity.

But times changed. King Henry VIII dissolved the abbey. Its materials helped rebuild Oxford. By 1542, the abbey became the see of a bishop. Later, the episcopal chair moved to Christ Church.

One story tells of the monks’ clever pension plan. Facing dismissal, they lowered the abbey bells into a barge. They claimed to have dropped them in the river. They hoped to recover them later.

Let’s fast forward to the late 19th century. William Henry Munsey arrived in Oxford. His farming business suffered due to foot and mouth disease. He partnered with Archer Cowley. Together they took over Osney Mill. The partnership dissolved. W.H. Munsey Ltd. continued the flour business. Fire destroyed the mill in 1945. The family decided not to rebuild. They moved the business to Wantage.

For over 60 years, Osney Mill lay derelict. In 2004, plans arose for redevelopment. Knowles & Son transformed the mill into flats. Renovation began in 2011. It was completed.

Today, Osney Mill stands repurposed. It is a reminder of Oxford’s layered past. From abbey to mill, it has transformed over time. It stands near Osney Lock and Osney Cemetery. Osney Island lies to the west. The railway station is to the north. Osney Mill connects us to Oxford’s rich story.
