Step back in time to when Sesto San Giovanni was a rural haven. This grand villa, Villa Puricelli Guerra, was built in the 18th century, nestled amongst vineyards and farmlands, a testament to a family’s life woven into the fabric of this land. The Puricelli Guerra family, of Spanish origin, were prominent landowners. But it was Giuseppe Girolamo Puricelli Guerra, the father of Giovanni Battista, who played a pivotal role in Sesto’s industrialization. In 1840, Giuseppe, a visionary entrepreneur, built a state-of-the-art silk mill within the villa’s grounds. It was a bold move, embracing the latest technology in the burgeoning textile industry. The villa, with its two courtyards – one for the family and one for the workers – became a microcosm of the changing times.

The workers, their hands calloused and skilled, transformed raw silk into beautiful fabrics. The courtyard rang with the rhythmic hum of the mill, a symphony of industry and ambition. But the silk mill was not the only echo of the Puricelli Guerra family within these walls. You can see it in the Gothic-style wing built around 1860. The elegant arches that lead to the garden, are graced by stained-glass windows intricately woven with the family’s initials. It is as if they’re whispering their story from beyond the years.

Unfortunately for Giovanni Battista, the family’s legacy continued without him. He died young, leaving behind a large fortune. His will, penned in 1856, bestowed his wealth to benefit the poor mothers of Milan, to help them raise their children free from hardship. The Villa Puricelli Guerra is a testament to a family who shaped Sesto San Giovanni’s past. Its transformation from a rural estate to a vibrant industrial center is a tale told in stone and steel, but also in the generous spirit of a young man whose legacy lives on.
