Isn’t it magnificent? Right here stands the Al-Serkal Mosque. It is Phnom Penh’s principal mosque. This is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith and resilience.

The Al-Serkal Mosque is relatively new. Yet it carries a rich history within its walls. It opened in March 2015. Prime Minister Hun Sen attended the inaugural ceremony. Over 1,000 people celebrated this grand occasion.

Eisa Bin Nasser Bin Abdullatif Alserkal funded this construction. He is an Emirati businessman. His generous contribution totaled $2.9 million. The mosque stands as a gift from the United Arab Emirates.

The Al-Serkal Mosque replaced an older mosque built in 1968. The original mosque was a gift from the Al Serkal Family. It stood near the Boeung Kak lake. The lake is now dry. The new building continues the legacy of its predecessor.

Inside the Al-Serkal Mosque, beauty abounds. Rose and turquoise tiles line the walls. Algerian artisans crafted these ceramics. Mosaics adorn the ceilings. A chandelier hangs from the central dome. Air conditioning keeps worshippers cool.

This mosque is in Ottoman style. It features one dome and two minarets. Nadan Engineering Consultancy designed the architecture. The Al-Serkal Mosque is the largest in Phnom Penh.

For Cambodia’s Muslim population, this mosque is a treasure. Muslims make up about 2 percent of the population. The majority are ethnic Cham. The Al-Serkal Mosque represents a grand achievement.

The Cham people suffered greatly under the Khmer Rouge. About 70,000 Cham Muslims died during that time. Religious freedom was limited in the 1980s. The Al-Serkal Mosque symbolizes renewed hope and faith.

However, the mosque’s construction also stirred controversy. A planned road project threatened its tranquility. The road would run through the mosque’s land. Some feared it would disrupt the peace. Others believed it would bring prosperity.

The road project has stalled for now. The route may change. The Al-Serkal Mosque remains a hub for the Muslim community. It is a place of worship and gathering.

The Al-Serkal Mosque stands on Street 86. It is not far from Phnom Penh’s city center. A large parking area accommodates visitors. Halal stalls and restaurants surround the mosque. Friday prayers are the busiest time here.

As you stand before the Al-Serkal Mosque, remember its story. It is a story of faith, generosity, and community. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Cambodia’s Muslims. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and significance. The Al-Serkal Mosque is a beacon of hope in Phnom Penh.
