A symphony of brick and stone rises before you. This is the Hu00f4tel de Ville of Lille a testament to resilience and ambition. It wasn’t always so grand.

The original Hu00f4tel de Ville stood on the Place Rihour a far cry from its current location. Built between 1847 and 1859 it occupied the site of the Palais Rihour a residence of the Dukes of Burgundy. But fate intervened. A devastating fire in 1916 reduced it to ashes.

This tragedy however paved the way for something new. A socialist municipality under Gustave Delory saw an opportunity not just for reconstruction but for a symbol of a new era. A competition launched in 1920 sought designs for a modern Hu00f4tel de Ville. u00c9mile Dubuisson’s vision won out.

The chosen site was the Square Ruault in the working-class district of Saint-Sauveur. It was a bold decision. The area was old and run-down. The project included a complete overhaul of the neighbourhood. New streets in the style of Haussmann were envisioned.

Construction began in 1924 under Mayor Roger Salengro. He added a striking element a magnificent belfry. This would become France’s first reinforced concrete structure exceeding 100 meters in height. Work on the belfry took place in two phases from 1929 to 1931. The completed Hu00f4tel de Ville was inaugurated in 1932.

However Dubuisson’s grand vision was only partially realised. War reparations promised to fund the project dwindled. The planned three wings were reduced to two. The final wing a modern addition wasn’t completed until 1992. Even the interior reflects this phased construction.

Today this Hu00f4tel de Ville is a breathtaking blend of styles. The Art Deco facade with its Flemish neo-Renaissance influences is a stunning example of regionalist Art Deco. The imposing 104-meter-tall belfry dominates the skyline. Its 400 steps lead to panoramic views. At its base stand statues of Lydu00e9ric and Phinaert legendary founders of Lille.

Inside a 143-meter-long gallery stretches like a municipal street. Pillars with floral motifs and marble and wrought iron details line its length. The halls are adorned with the fleur-de-lys of Lille’s coat of arms a tribute to its history. Even Roger Salengro’s office remains untouched a memorial to the mayor who tragically died by suicide in 1936.

The Hu00f4tel de Ville is more than a building. It’s a narrative of fire and rebirth ambition and compromise. It’s a testament to Lille’s spirit a structure that reflects the city’s character its layered history. And it’s a view you won’t soon forget.
