It’s the church of a former Benedictine monastery the very wellspring of Chemnitz’s development.

The other church is St Petrikirche a stunning neogothic hall church. It stands majestically in the cultural heart of the inner city next to the university the opera house and art collections. The St Petrikirche was built between 1885 and 1888. The design was by the Leipzig architect Hans Enger. It’s a true architectural masterpiece. It features a magnificent portal with a large relief depicting the words “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened”. This detail alone speaks volumes about the church’s welcoming nature.

But the beauty of St Petri Schlosskirchgemeinde isn’t limited to architecture. The community places a strong emphasis on church music. The St Petri Schloss Kantorei choir adds its voice to the rich musical tapestry. Regular concerts are held on the exceptional organs of both St Petri and the Schlosskirche. Services are held every Sunday. They alternate between the Schlosskirche on even-numbered Sundays and St Petrikirche on odd-numbered Sundays. The musical tradition is central to the life of the parish.

Interestingly the bells of St Petrikirche have a story of their own. Originally cast by G A Jauck of Leipzig they were among the heaviest in the city. Sadly some were lost during World War II. The remaining bell a weighty 1600 kilograms now resides at Schlosskirche. Later during the post-war period the three steel bells from the destroyed Lukaskirche found a home in St Petrikirche.
