What if I told you a humble Italian immigrant became the first American saint? Her name was Frances Xavier Cabrini. Here at St. Frances Cabrini Shrine in New York City, her legacy lives on. This shrine honors her remarkable life. It celebrates her devotion to immigrants.

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Shrine overlooks the Hudson River. It sits in northern Manhattan. From here, you can see New Jersey. This location wasn’t chosen at random. Mother Cabrini herself picked this spot in 1899. Back then, it was a remote area. She envisioned a place of education and spiritual growth.

Initially, Cabrini bought the property for a boarding school. It was named Sacred Heart Villa. Tuition from wealthier families subsidized free education. This was for poor children in her other schools. Cabrini always had a practical side.

After Mother Cabrini’s death in 1917, the mission continued. In 1930, a new building replaced the mansion. It became Mother Cabrini High School. Her remains were moved to the school chapel in 1933. This was in anticipation of her beatification.

Frances Xavier Cabrini was canonized in 1946. It was a monumental event. She became the first naturalized US citizen to be declared a saint. Over 45000 people visited the chapel. They came to venerate her relics.

A separate shrine was built in 1957. Mother Cabrini’s body was moved once more. She now rests in a glass reliquary. It lies beneath the main altar. Her remains are covered with a wax mask. This allows visitors to see her as she looked in death. Being so close to a saint is a truly reverential experience.

The sanctuary feels like an island within the chapel. Visitors kneel at the marble communion rail. They pray near this great saint. They ask for her intercession. Behind the reliquary stands a statue. It depicts the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This reflects the order she founded.

Above the Sacred Heart is a mosaic. It shows scenes from her life. The mosaics are in chronological order. They are set against a golden backdrop. One scene depicts young Francesca learning from her sister. Another shows her praying. Another features Pope Leo XIII. He directed her to the West.

Other scenes illustrate her work with the sick. Ships symbolize her many voyages. Despite her fear of water, she crossed the Atlantic 24 times. One voyage she almost took was on the Titanic. Divine intervention led to a change of plans. She thankfully avoided that ill-fated journey.

A scene with the Statue of Liberty highlights her service to immigrants. She taught catechism. She opened orphanages and schools. A final scene shows angels escorting her to heaven.

Stained-glass windows line the nave. These depict scenes from the Mysteries of the Rosary. At the back of the chapel is a stained-glass portrait of Mother Cabrini. Beneath it is her carriage. A small museum displays her belongings. These include her habit, notes and shoes. These items reveal her humility.

The Blessed Sacrament chapel offers a peaceful space for prayer. The stained-glass window here displays the order’s seal. It shows the Heart of Christ. A star represents Mary. Missionary Sisters are depicted as vessels. They roam the oceans. They are bearers of Christ’s love.

Today, St. Frances Cabrini Shrine continues its mission. The high school closed in 2014. The building is now leased to a charter school. The revenue supports the Missionary Sisters’ missions worldwide. These missions aid refugees. They support schools and health facilities.

Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC operates nearby. It offers legal and social services. It assists migrants seeking official papers. It helps reunite families. The neighborhood surrounding the shrine is quiet. It is residential. Fort Tryon Park offers lawns and flowerbeds. It provides views of the Hudson River. These views were much loved by Mother Cabrini. This shrine stands as a testament to her enduring impact. It is a place of pilgrimage. It is a beacon of hope for immigrants everywhere.
