“Jesus 1690 Maria” a mission bell whispers stories of old, hanging atop the Parish Hall of Mary Star of the Sea. This is a tale of faith, art, and community.
Mary Star of the Sea has been a spiritual landmark in La Jolla since its first Mass on January 10, 1909. Fr. Joseph C. Mesny, the founding pastor, led the congregation then. The original church stood at Kline Street and Girard Avenue. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. At that time, San Diego was part of the Los Angeles-San Diego Diocese.
Fr. Thomas J. McNamara became pastor in the 1930s. He spearheaded the construction of a new church in 1937. Carleton Monroe Winslow designed it. It echoed the architectural style of early California missions. Bishop Charles Frances Buddy oversaw its completion. He was the first bishop of the Diocese of San Diego.
The 1940s and 1950s were a time of growth. Fr. Joseph V. Clarkin became pastor in 1939. The parish built a new rectory. Stella Maris Academy was founded in 1947. The Sisters of the Holy Cross taught there. The school started with four classrooms and a music room. It accommodated over 200 students. It expanded in 1955 to meet the growing needs of the community.
In 1952, ground was broken on The Aula. Today, it is known as the Parish Hall. It included a library, music rooms, and an auditorium. The mission bell added a historical touch. Fr. Mesny brought it to La Jolla. It is believed to have come from Spain with early Franciscan padres.
Mary Star of the Sea is also known for its art. Alfredo Ramos Martinez painted a fresco titled “Our Lady, Star of the Sea” over the entrance in 1937. Exposure damaged it. An exact replica in mosaic tile replaced it in 1962. It was fabricated in Rome. John Henry de Rosen adorned the interior in the 1950s. He created a large mural behind the sanctuary. He also made smaller paintings for statues of Mary with the Infant Jesus and St. Joseph.
Throughout its history, devoted pastors have led Mary Star of the Sea. Fr. Joseph C. Mesny, Fr. Thomas J. McNamara, and Fr. Joseph V. Clarkin shaped the church. Rev. Patrick J. Mulcahy is the current pastor. He continues this tradition.
Mary Star of the Sea remains a center of worship, education, and community. It is deeply rooted in its history. The church’s mission is clear. It is to live the Good News by being Christ to others. This is done through worship, sacraments and service. The spirit of the Kingdom guides them.
