Perhaps you’ve driven over the Isis Bridge without realizing its significance. This modern road bridge spans the River Thames just south of Oxford. It carries the Oxford Ring Road, part of the A423. The Isis Bridge connects Oxfordshire and Berkshire. It lies on the Thames reach between Sandford Lock and Iffley Lock.

Let’s delve into the Isis Bridge’s story. This bridge was built in the 1960s. It opened to traffic in 1965. This happened when the ring road section between South Hinksey and Heyford Hill was completed.

Did you know the Isis Bridge is a single arch structure? The British Constructional Steelwork Association built it for Oxfordshire County Council. They used 5,000 square meters of steel. The Oxfordshire County Council maintains it.

In 2003, the Isis Bridge underwent significant work. A full wet and dry blast and coating system was applied to the steelwork. The bridge was also strengthened at that time.

The River Thames has different names in Oxford. Above Oxford, it is called the River Thames. But through Oxford, it is also known as the River Isis. That’s how the Isis Bridge got its name.

Interestingly, other bridges have also been called Isis Bridge. Kennington Railway Bridge and a bridge by the Oxford Canal, Isis Lock, share the name. The next ring road bridge upstream is named Thames Bridge.

The Isis Bridge stands 16 feet 6 inches high. That’s about 5.03 meters. It has three continuous girder spans. The deck is made of steel with a composite reinforced concrete slab.

Next time you cross the Isis Bridge, remember its history. Think about the engineering and maintenance that keep it going. It’s more than just a road. It is a vital part of Oxford’s infrastructure. It ensures the Oxford Ring Road keeps moving.
