Beneath our feet lies a story of patriotism, loss, and remembrance embodied by the Körner-Denkmal. This monument is dedicated to Carl Theodor Körner, a celebrated German poet and dramatist. He became famous for his inspiring songs during the liberation war against Napoleonic rule from 1806 to 1813.

Körner’s life was tragically cut short. He fell as a “singer and hero” with the Lützow Free Corps near Gadebusch. His death transformed him into a patriotic icon throughout Germany. The Körner-Denkmal in Chemnitz reminds us of his sacrifice and impact.

The original Körner-Denkmal in Chemnitz was erected to honor Körner. The “Körner-Tisch” association, founded in 1892, initiated the monument’s creation. They envisioned a tribute to the patriot who fought in the liberation wars. The location chosen was Körnerplatz, where a “Körner-Eiche” had stood since 1863.

Professor Eppler, a renowned artist from Dresden, designed the monument. He modeled it after the Dresden monument. The bronze statue stood three meters tall and cost 15,000 Marks. It was unveiled on October 18, 1901, on the anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig. Six German oak trees were planted around the Körner-Denkmal.

Tragically, the Körner-Denkmal did not survive the aftermath of the Second World War. The new authorities labeled the statue a “militaristic symbol”. It was senselessly destroyed and has since disappeared.

Interestingly, Körner’s connection to this region extends beyond Chemnitz. Between 1808 and 1810, he studied at the Freiberg Mining Academy. During a geological excursion in 1810, he visited the Zschopau valley near Frankenberg. There, inspired by the Harras legend, Körner penned his famous ballad “Harras, the Bold Leaper”.

Frankenberg also honored Körner. On the fiftieth anniversary of his death in 1863, a festive procession marched to the Harrasfelsen. Veterans of the liberation war participated. Mayor Meltzer delivered a passionate speech referencing Körner, Ernst Moritz Arndt, and Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. A “Körnereiche” was planted but later destroyed by fire in 1950.

In 1869, a “Körner-Kreuz” was erected on the Harras-Felsen. The iron cross stood nine ells high. It bore the inscription: “To the singer and hero Theodor Körner, the residents of Frankenberg in memory of August 26, 1863.”

Even after political changes, Körner’s memory persisted. In 1913, Frankenberg unveiled a memorial stone with his relief. Despite later controversies and renaming of streets, the Körner monument was eventually restored.

The story of the Körner-Denkmal is a complex one. It reflects changing political tides and enduring patriotic sentiments. Though the original statue is gone, the spirit of Theodor Körner lives on. It lives on through his poetry and the continued remembrance of his sacrifice.
