“Lemmy a quid ’til Friday?” The phrase echoes the nickname of a true rock icon, Lemmy Kilmister, whose final resting place we find ourselves before today. Lemmy Kilmister, the gravel-voiced God of Rock ‘n’ Roll, rests here in Los Angeles, a city he called home for over 25 years. His journey from the smoky clubs of 1960s England to the sunny streets of Hollywood is a testament to his unwavering dedication to rock and roll. Lemmy’s life was a whirlwind of roaring engines, thundering basslines, and the clinking of Jack Daniels glasses. Here at his tomb, inscribed with “BORN TO LOSE, LIVED TO WIN”, we remember not just the musician, but the man. Lemmy Kilmister, born Ian Fraser Kilmister, spent his life defying expectations. From his early days as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix to his reign as the driving force behind Motörhead, Lemmy lived life on his own terms. He was a unique figure in the rock world. His gravelly voice, signature mutton chops, and military-inspired fashion made him instantly recognizable. Lemmy’s booming Rickenbacker bass became the backbone of Motörhead’s raw, powerful sound. His aggressive, chord-heavy playing style, often likened to a “deep guitarist”, set him apart from traditional bassists. He found a home in Los Angeles in 1990, a place where his hard-living, rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle wasn’t just accepted, it was celebrated. He became a regular at the Rainbow Bar and Grill on the Sunset Strip, just a short distance from his modest two-room apartment. Lemmy Kilmister’s life was a non-stop rock ‘n’ roll ride, fuelled by a legendary intake of Jack Daniels and cigarettes. He lived his life on the road, touring relentlessly with Motörhead until just weeks before his death in December 2015, just days after his 70th birthday. Diagnosed with prostate cancer and facing congestive heart failure, Lemmy met his end with the same defiance he showed throughout his life. Lemmy Kilmister’s legacy extends beyond his music. He was an icon of rebellion, a symbol of living life authentically, and a testament to the power of rock and roll. As we stand here at his tomb, let us remember the man who lived by his own rules, played by his own rules, and left an unforgettable mark on the world of music. Born to lose, lived to win. Lemmy Kilmister.
