In 1888, a revolutionary invention took shape in Dublin. A Scottish vet named John Boyd Dunlop crafted the first practical pneumatic tyre. He initially designed this innovative tyre for his son’s tricycle. Right here on Stephen Street, the world’s first pneumatic tyre factory opened its doors in 1889. Harvey du Cros, recognizing the immense potential of Dunlop’s invention, partnered with him. The Dunlop Tyre Factory quickly became a hub of activity, meeting the burgeoning demand for the new safety bicycles. The Dunlop Tyre Factory in Dublin wasn’t just a place of production. It was a symbol of innovation. The factory’s location, next to St. Enda’s School, further cemented its place in Dublin’s history. The original factory, sadly, is no more, making way for a Dunnes Stores office development in the mid-2000s. However, the facade remains, a testament to the ingenuity that once thrived within those walls. A plaque still marks this historic spot, commemorating the birth of the pneumatic tyre and the Dunlop Tyre Factory’s significant contribution to cycling and transportation worldwide.
