Remember the sacrifices of war. Here at the Sowjetische Kriegsgräberstätte Stone, we stand on hallowed ground. This is a place where the echoes of conflict resonate through time. It is a somber reminder of lives lost.

The Sowjetische Kriegsgräberstätte Stone serves as a memorial. It commemorates the Soviet prisoners of war and soldiers who died in this region. These individuals perished during World War II and its immediate aftermath. Their stories are etched into the very fabric of this place.

This memorial is dedicated to over 1,330 killed Soviet prisoners of war. It also honors Soviet soldiers who fell in May 1945. Some died later from their wounds.

Between 1946 and 1948, a dedicated cemetery was established in Chemnitz-Reichenhain. It was located along Richterweg. This Ehrenfriedhof became the final resting place for Soviet war victims. Their remains were gathered from across the Chemnitz region. They were then interred here.

Records show that in 1946 alone, 1,130 interments occurred from the surrounding district. Among those buried were Soviet prisoners of war. They were initially laid to rest in Rochlitz. These prisoners had been assigned to various labor units around Chemnitz. They succumbed to the harsh conditions of their captivity. The remains of prisoners from smaller cemeteries in the Floeha region were also moved here.

The Sowjetische Kriegsgräberstätte Stone does not just hold prisoners of war. It also contains the remains of Red Army soldiers and officers. These men fell during battles near Chemnitz in the spring. A third group of victims rests here. These are Soviet civilians. They were forcibly brought to Germany for labor.

After 1948, the site became a central burial ground for the Soviet garrison. This use continued until early 1956. The garrison was stationed in what was then Karl-Marx-Stadt.

Entering the park-like grounds, a striking monument immediately captures attention. It is made of red sandstone. The massive obelisk is flanked by two stone-carved soldiers. They stand guard. They are a silent honor guard for the dead.

Grave markers dot the landscape. These mark over 600 individual graves. Names and dates are inscribed on them. In the rear, three collective tombs hold the remains of more than 700 people. Sadly, only a third of these are known by name.

One gravestone bears a poignant inscription. It reads: “Here rests the ashes of Soviet prisoners of war, who died in fascist custody (1941–1945).”

The Sowjetische Kriegsgräberstätte Stone is not just a collection of graves. It is a place of reflection. It is a place of remembrance. It serves as a stark reminder of the cost of war. It also underscores the importance of preserving memory. Let us remember the lives lost and strive for a future defined by peace.
