Remember Barbara Bush Branch Library’s humble beginnings? Back in 1973 Spring Texas had a population of 9000. The community needed a library.

The Barbara Bush Branch Library stands as a beacon of knowledge. It honors a champion of literacy. This library has a rich history. It reflects the community’s dedication to learning.

The original Cypress Creek Library was built in 1976. A group of citizens recognized the need for expanded access to county resources. They formed a library committee in September 1973. In October Spring ISD voted to donate land for a public library.

Judge Elliot initially prioritized another library. But he reversed his decision. The Cypress Creek community would get a new library.

In April 1974 a location on Cypresswood Drive was chosen. The developer of Wimbledon subdivision donated land.

The groundbreaking ceremony occurred April 30 1975. It was called the social event of the season.

The library opened to the public on June 19 1976. It featured nearly every modern convenience. The 9600 square foot building held records cassettes games and toys.

Stephen King visited the Cypress Creek Library in 1979. He did an author talk and book signing.

By the early 1990s the original building was too small. It could not meet the needs of the community. In 1997 the library received 4 million for a new building. It was named after Barbara Bush.

The Barbara Bush Branch Library opened December 18 2002. Barbara Bush herself cut the ribbon February 7 2003.

After the grand opening the library circulated 56000 materials in two months. The self-checkout machines were very popular.

Hurricane Harvey caused significant damage in 2017. The library was closed for nine months for repairs.

Barbara Bush passed away in 2018. The library became a place for the community to honor her.

During the Covid-19 pandemic staff transitioned to virtual service. Curbside Larry promoted the new service. His videos went viral.

The Barbara Bush Branch Library reopened to the public in May 2021. It continues to serve as a vital resource. It offers computer labs meeting rooms and passport services. It stands as a testament to Barbara Bush’s legacy. The Barbara Bush Branch Library promotes reading and literacy.
