Perhaps you’ve heard of Chemnitz’s past as Karl-Marx-Stadt? Today, we’re standing before a powerful reminder of that era: the Lob des Kommunismus Sculpture.

This isn’t just a random collection of stones. The Lob des Kommunismus Sculpture is a multipart work. It reflects the city’s socialist past.

The Lob des Kommunismus Sculpture was inaugurated on October 6, 1972. It stands on Brückenstraße. This location was central to the city’s identity. The sculpture embodies the development of society. It shows its journey towards a communist ideal.

Martin Wetzel, Joachim Jastram and Eberhard Roßdeutscher created it. They were prominent artists of their time. They were tasked with creating this large work of art. The Lob des Kommunismus Sculpture used Bulgarian limestone.

The sculpture is based on five poems by Bertolt Brecht. Each poem explores a different aspect of communist ideology. These poems are: “Praise of the Party”, “Praise of Communism”, “Praise of the Revolutionary”, “Praise of Dialectic”, and “Praise of Learning”.

One section features Lenin. Jastram sculpted the Lenin figure. In the background are four armed Russian revolutionaries. One is wounded. He rests his bandaged hand on Lenin’s shoulder. Lenin embodies the wise man in this scene. He sits calmly with crossed legs. His gaze is steady. He seems thoughtful. Lenin is presented as an important communist thinker.

Interestingly, the Lenin figure is damaged. His nose and left ear are broken. This damage likely resulted from vandalism. Opponents of Lenin probably did it.

The Lob des Kommunismus Sculpture is a complex artwork. It blends art, ideology and history. Take a moment to consider the messages it conveys. Think about the artists’ intentions. Remember the historical context that birthed this monument. It serves as a reminder of a bygone era. It sparks reflection on Chemnitz’s journey. It encourages a conversation about its present identity.
