Picture the imposing structure of Saint Raymond’s Roman Catholic Church. It stands tall a testament to faith and community. This isn’t just any church. It’s the first Roman Catholic church in the Bronx. Imagine its humble beginnings in 1842. An old wooden barn was transformed into a temporary church. Reverend John Hughes a visionary leader secured an acre of land. He built the church and a cemetery next to it.

Saint Raymond’s Church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living history. The original church proved too small. Parishioners stood during Mass. The current Byzantine Revival style church was built in 1898. George H Streeton designed this beautiful church. He also designed the Cathedral Basilica of St James in Brooklyn. The church is adorned with stunning details. Skilled craftsmen from Italy worked on its construction.

The church served a growing community. It began with Irish and German immigrants. Later Italian immigrants joined the parish. In the 1970s Hispanics and African Americans became part of the community. Even more recently West Africans from Nigeria and Ghana joined the fold. The congregation’s diversity is a beautiful thing. The church continues to thrive.

Saint Raymond’s is a cornerstone of the community. The church had a school. The Catholic Protectory an orphanage was located nearby. This orphanage taught children valuable trades. The boys learned carpentry and blacksmithing. The girls learned to cook and embroider. The orphanage was part of the parish until 1938.

The church continued to expand. A new elementary school opened in 1909. St Raymond Academy for girls opened in 1960. St Raymond High School for boys opened in 1962. The church is a center for education faith and community. The church itself is a stunning example of Byzantine Revival architecture.

Saint Raymond’s Church is more than a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub. It’s a place where generations have come together. It’s a symbol of hope and resilience. It’s a story of faith community and growth. The church embodies the spirit of the Bronx. Step inside and feel the weight of history. Feel the warmth of faith. Feel the power of community. This isn’t just a church. It’s a living legacy.
