Remarkable isn’t it? This very spot holds a piece of Saxon history. Before you stands the Kursächsische Postmeilensäule a milestone marking a significant point on the old postal route.

This isn’t just any milestone. It’s a Kursächsische Postmeilensäule a monument erected during the reign of Elector Frederick Augustus I of Saxony. Land and border commissioner Adam Friedrich Zürner oversaw its construction in the first half of the 18th century. The original Kursächsische Postmeilensäule stood here marking the distance from Dresden to Hof. This specific Kursächsische Postmeilensäule bears the year 1723 and the serial number 32.

Imagine the scene in 1723. Carriages rattled along this very road. They carried not only letters but travelers too. Twice a week in 1696 the swift post conveyed correspondence and passengers. The early postal carriages were simple. They were unsprung carts with wickerwork sides later covered with canvas. Riders sat on wooden benches often using fur blankets for warmth.

The road connected Leipzig to Annaberg via Borna. Chemnitz was a crucial stop. August the Strong had his kingdom surveyed in 1722. This standardized measurements creating a unified system. Quarter half and full-mile stones were erected to reflect this. A Kursächsische postal mile was equivalent to two walking hours around 9 kilometers.

Sadly the original Kursächsische Postmeilensäule was destroyed in a traffic accident in 1925. This is a replica. It was created using the remains of the original stone. It was re-erected in 2007 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Röhrsdorf. The original parts had been in a small park about 100 meters from its current location.

The Kursächsische Postmeilensäule stands as a testament to a bygone era. It reminds us of the vital role of communication and travel in shaping history. It’s a silent witness to the passing of centuries. Take a moment to appreciate this important piece of Chemnitz’s past. The Kursächsische Postmeilensäule is more than just a stone.
