What if I told you a temple in Osaka holds the graves of a tragic wife, a sumo wrestler, and a comedic actor? This is Anyoji. It is not just a temple. Anyoji is a stage for stories of love, dedication, and laughter.

Anyoji is a subordinate temple to Isshinji. It belongs to the Chion-in branch of the Jodo Sect. Joyoseikunni founded Anyoji in March 1689. Its main deity is Amitabha.

Fire twice ravaged Anyoji. Once in 1887. Again during World War II in 1945. The current buildings date back to 1959.

Here lie Osan Kamiji. She was the wife of Jihei Kamiya. Her faithfulness became famous in Monzaemon Chikamatsu’s play. It was called “Double Suicide: Amijima of the Heavens”. Imagine her unwavering devotion echoing through the temple grounds.

Yauemon Inagawa rests here too. He was one of Osaka’s most celebrated sumo wrestlers. His gravestone speaks of his love for sumo. It tells of his diligent training. People loved him for it. Picture the strength and passion that made him a legend.

Gyogan Sato is also buried here. He excelled at kyogen theater. Kyogen is a light, humorous interlude in Noh plays. His Komoriren kyogen troupe was very popular. He was known for subtle humor. He also did biting satire. Hear the echoes of laughter and wit that once filled the air.

Anyoji stands as an Osaka City historical monument. It is located at 1-7-15, Kishinosato-higashi.

Anyoji Temple is a place of calm reflection. It honors those who lived extraordinary lives. They excelled in love, sport, and art. Take a moment. Remember their stories. Let Anyoji’s peaceful atmosphere inspire you.
