The Generationen Sculpture was conceived in 1985. Sculptors Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff and Martin Matschinsky created it. The sculpture was unveiled in 1987. Its broken chain symbolizes the severed connections between West and East Berlin. This division was caused by the Berlin Wall’s construction.
After the Wall fell, the city bought the Generationen Sculpture. It serves to commemorate this period in German history. The Generationen Sculpture was part of “Skulpturenboulevard Kurfürstendamm.” This event celebrated Berlin’s 750th anniversary in 1987.
The city allowed the sculptors creative freedom. They could choose where to erect their work along the Kurfürstendamm. The Matschinsky-Denninghoffs selected Tauentzienstraße. This location is in front of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche. The church was heavily damaged during World War II.
The Generationen Sculpture features four steel tubes. Each tube is about two meters in diameter. They are reinforced with a concrete base. One end of each tube tilts. Then it changes direction completely. The tubes loop but do not touch. This symbolizes the closeness and isolation between East and West Berlin.
Chrome nickel steel covers the tubes’ surface. The steel can darken or shine. This depends on the time of day. Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff described the sculpture’s impact. She said it is accessible from all sides. Viewers can perceive the direction of West-East and East-West.
