Have you ever wondered about the secrets whispered by ancient stones? Schloss Lichtenwalde stands before you a testament to centuries of history. This Baroque masterpiece perched above the Zschopau River near Chemnitz has witnessed eras unfold. Its very walls hum with tales of powerful families and dramatic events.
Schloss Lichtenwalde was not always a grand palace. Around 1230 a sturdy castle stood here. Built by the Margraves of Meissen it served as a bulwark against rival lords. A knight named Heidenreich von Lichtenwalde was its castellan in 1280. Imagine the medieval life within those walls. The clash of steel the echoing footsteps of guards.
The castle changed hands many times. The von Harras family held it from 1447 to 1561. Dietrich von Harras a figure of legend expanded the castle around 1474. Theodor Körner even immortalized him in a ballad. A true knight’s tale!
Then in 1561 the castle passed to the Saxon court. It fell into disrepair. In 1694 the von Bnau family acquired it. Then in 1719 it was sold to Christoph Heinrich Count von Watzdorf. He razed the old structures. He built the magnificent Baroque Schloss we see today.
His son Friedrich Carl added the sprawling park around 1730. He created the elaborate water features. This park became one of Germany’s most beautiful in 2005. Can you imagine strolling through those meticulously planned gardens?
Tragedy struck in 1905. A devastating fire engulfed Schloss Lichtenwalde. The roof and upper floors were destroyed. Fortunately it was rebuilt by Gustav Fröhlich a Dresden court architect. He restored it faithfully though with some eclectic additions.
The Vitzthum von Eckstädt family owned Lichtenwalde until 1945. Then the Red Army seized it. They expelled the last countess Sibylle. The Schloss was looted its precious contents vanished. A sad chapter in its rich history.
After reunification Schloss Lichtenwalde became property of the Free State of Saxony. It faced a uncertain future. A citizens’ campaign saved it from sale. The Augustusburg/Scharfenstein/Lichtenwalde gGmbH took over in 1999. They transformed it into a museum complex.
The current collection of paintings and furniture is largely thanks to a donation from Chemnitz art dealer Georg Brühl. This museum showcases not just the Schloss’s history. It also exhibits African and Asian art. The Chinese Salon once home to the Vitzthum porcelain collection is a highlight.
The Schlosskapelle the castle chapel is another jewel. Dating partly from the 15th century it houses a restored Donati organ from 1741. This incredible instrument was temporarily in Ebersdorf. It now plays within the chapel once more.
