The initial church construction was Roman. It is believed a Roman oratory existed nearby. The proximity to a property called Paço suggests a primitive palatium. This palatium may explain the earlier supposition. Later, the church underwent adaptation during the medieval period.
About half a century ago the last reconstruction took place. At that time, they removed the original Roman baptismal font. It was taken to the Vila Verde chapel. It remains there today. The north side shows Gothic characteristics. It features a simple Renaissance portico. On this side, you can see three crosses engraved in a stone. The largest cross represents Christ’s. The two smaller crosses represent those of the thieves. They were crucified beside him.
Above the rose window is an image of Saint Peter. He holds the keys. He is the patron saint of this parish. The parish was mentioned in the 13th century. It was known as “Parrochia Santi Petri Cadii”.
Legend gives another possible meaning to “Caíde de Rei”. It says the king fell from his horse. This happened where they would build the Casa da Quintã. Another story speaks of a Saracen village here. This was during Arab rule. The place of Mouro still remains. “Caíde” may be another form of “Kaid”. Kaid is an Arabic word for chief or alcaide. This aligns tradition with historical foundations. Some dictionaries suggest “Caíde” comes from “[Villa] Cagildi”. This is Low Latin for “the Quinta of Cagildo”.
In 1708, it was a rectory of the Order of Christ. It was in the old diocese of Braga. By 1839, it became part of the Amarante region. In 1852, it belonged to the Porto diocese. This parish once belonged to the extinct bishopric of Penafiel.
