Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Manhattan’s East Village lies East Side Community High School. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to community spirit and resilience. East Side Community High School opened its doors in 1991. It welcomes students from 6th to 12th grade. The school’s blue and white colors symbolize its vibrant spirit. The mascot, the Tigers, reflects the students’ fierce determination and strength. East Side Community High School isn’t just about academics. It’s a place where students learn and grow. They develop into well-rounded individuals. In 2010, the school boasted a diverse student body. It consisted of 54% Hispanic, 17% Black, 15% White, 10% Asian or Pacific Islander, and 4% other. This blend of cultures creates a rich learning environment. It exposes students to different perspectives and backgrounds. East Side Community High School also played a unique role in the aftermath of 9/11. Students participated in the Living Memorials Project. They collaborated with the Open Road advocacy group and Cornell University. Together they transformed a space beside the school into Open Road Park. This park, complete with a garden, serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost. It’s a place of reflection and remembrance, born from the hearts of students. East Side Community High School has also faced its share of controversy. In 2021, Principal Mark Federman distributed a survey. It asked White parents to reflect on their “Whiteness”. This sparked a heated debate about racial discourse in America. Despite the controversy, East Side Community High School remains a vital part of the East Village community.
