Masjid Nurul Yaqin shares a name with another mosque. That mosque is Masjid Nurul Islam in Batam. Masjid Nurul Islam is located in the Batamindo Industrial Park. This park is in Muka Kuning. Muka Kuning is an industrial area. It blossomed through cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore.
Imagine Muka Kuning transformed from a wilderness into a modern industrial park. The park includes housing for workers and community centers. Among these is Masjid Nurul Islam. Its tower stands out amidst the greenery. Some trees are even Sakura trees that bloom beautifully.
Masjid Nurul Islam became a central point for worship. It also became a center for Islamic teachings for workers. Prof. DR. B.J. Habibie inaugurated it on October 26, 1991. Habibie was deeply involved in Indonesia’s development.
Initially, Masjid Nurul Islam was the only place of worship in the area. Every weekend, it buzzed with Islamic studies. Over time, its activities grew. The Nurul Islam Group formed to manage these programs.
The construction of Masjid Nurul Islam coincided with the development of the Sei Beduk Reservoir. Habibie also oversaw this project. This shows his commitment to the area’s comprehensive development.
Masjid Nurul Islam could originally only hold 40 rows of worshippers. It was about 20 meters square. The building used granite. As the community grew, the mosque expanded. Now, it can accommodate 3000 people.
In the past, Muslim employees of Batamindo gathered at Masjid Nurul Islam. The mosque became known nationally. Prominent figures and clerics from Jakarta and abroad visited. Even figures like Amin Rais and Mahfud MD prayed there.
