Navigating the vibrant streets of Milan, have you ever noticed a street named after an economist? Via Melchiorre Gioia stands as a testament to Melchiorre Gioia, the Piacenza-born philosopher and economist. Via Melchiorre Gioia wasn’t always its name. Originally, it was part of the Strada Postale per Monza, the main road connecting Milan to Monza. In 1878, the section from Ponte delle Gabelle to the new ring road was renamed to honor Gioia. Imagine the scene in the 1960s. The eastern side of Via Melchiorre Gioia was bordered by the Martesana Canal. This canal, commissioned by Francesco Sforza in 1457, carried water from the Adda River to Milan’s Navigli district. To make way for a new business district, the canal was covered, a project that remains partially complete. The Martesana still flows, largely uncovered, except for the final stretch beneath Via Melchiorre Gioia. This history explains some of the unusual building arrangements along the street. For example, the Salesian church and buildings face Via Copernico, their backs to Via Melchiorre Gioia. This is a direct result of the canal once blocking access. Via Melchiorre Gioia has been at the heart of Milan’s evolving urban landscape, particularly the Centro Direzionale project. From the Torre Servizi Tecnici Comunali in the 1960s to the modern Garibaldi-Repubblica project, Via Melchiorre Gioia has become a vital artery. The street now boasts impressive structures like Palazzo Lombardia and Palazzo INPS. Via Melchiorre Gioia also intersects with Viale della Liberazione. This avenue runs past the Porta Nuova – Varesine project, home to the Torre Diamante, eventually reaching Piazza della Repubblica. Nearby, you’ll find the Torre Galfa. For cyclists, Via Melchiorre Gioia offers a dedicated bike path along its entire length. Furthermore, the street plays a role in Milan’s plan to reopen the Cerchia dei Navigli, the city’s historic network of canals. As you walk down Via Melchiorre Gioia today, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From a postal road to a modern thoroughfare, this street reflects Milan’s dynamism and its capacity for reinvention.
