Curious about how a German-style castle transformed into a beloved community hub? The Weehawken Public Library stands before us not just as a repository of books. It is a landmark with a rich and fascinating history.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Weehawken in the early 1900s. Wilhelm Joseph Peter a wealthy brewer decided to build a mansion. Peter wanted a home reminiscent of a German castle. Completed in 1904 the mansion boasted 17 rooms. It featured ornate woodwork marble and stained glass. Peter even had his own art studio. He was encouraged by Hudson River School artist Max Eaglau.

Fast forward to the 1930s. The Port Authority acquired the mansion for the Lincoln Tunnel construction. Luckily the Peter Mansion was spared demolition. In 1942 a new chapter began. The Peter Mansion became the Weehawken Public Library. Local residents donated books and memorabilia. The library quickly became a vital part of the community.

For decades the Weehawken Public Library served its purpose. But it was time for an update. In 1997 the library closed for extensive renovations. It reopened in 1999. The Weehawken Public Library was modernized.

The Weehawken Public Library has about 43000 volumes. It circulates over 40000 items each year. The library is part of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. This gives access to even more resources.

But the Weehawken Public Library offers more than just books. It is home to the Weehawken Historical Commission. They preserve the town’s history. Their website Weehawken Time Machine has digitized many historical photos and documents. You can explore Weehawken’s past online.

The Weehawken Public Library also hosts A Taste of Weehawken. This annual culinary event raises money for the library. It showcases local restaurants. It offers stunning views of Lincoln Harbor.

In 2022 the town council approved funds to modernize the library again. These improvements include energy-efficient lighting and better Wi-Fi. There will be more USB ports for public workstations. The Weehawken Public Library is always evolving to meet the needs of the community.

Today the Weehawken Public Library at 49 Hauxhurst Avenue stands as a testament to community and transformation. From German castle to public library this building is a landmark. It is a place where history and knowledge come together. As you leave take a moment to appreciate the Weehawken Public Library. It is more than just a building. It is a treasure.
