Nestled in the heart of Augsburg-Kriegshaber stands the Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit, a church whose story echoes resilience and transformation. The Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Originally built in the neugothic style between 1866 and 1868, the Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit served the growing Catholic population of Kriegshaber. Before its construction, locals had to travel to the neighboring village of Oberhausen for services. The church, designed by Max Treu, was a typical brick structure of his design, similar to St. Ulrich in Königsbrunn. Its interior boasted a neugothic high altar by Karl Ebner, adorned with a Trinity painting by Liberat Hundertpfund and sculptures by Johann Riedmiller. Two side altars, dedicated to Mary and Joseph, completed the ensemble. The church’s original 46-meter tower, however, met an unfortunate end. Deemed unsafe in 1929, it was dismantled down to the belfry. Architect Michael Kurz oversaw its reconstruction, giving it the simpler, 37-meter spire we see today. The church’s interior also underwent a dramatic shift in the 1930s, shedding its neugothic elements for a more modern aesthetic. Then, tragedy struck. During a bombing raid in 1944, the Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit was devastated. Only the choir and tower survived. Yet, from the ruins, the church was reborn. Kurz again led the reconstruction, adding side aisles and extending the nave. The Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit we see today is a blend of its past lives. It’s a mix of neugothic origins, modern alterations, and post-war additions. Inside, look for Karl Radinger’s artwork, including the altarpieces, Stations of the Cross, and a large nativity scene. Admire the vibrant windows in the apse, symbolizing the Trinity with yellow for God the Father, red for God the Son, and blue for the Holy Spirit. The Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit continues to serve its community, standing as a symbol of hope and rebirth. Its story, etched in brick and mortar, speaks of the power of faith and the enduring human spirit.
