Did you know Parco Uditore was once a forgotten space? This vibrant green haven in Palermo wasn’t always a park. In the 18th century this land was known as Fondo Murano then Fondo Morello. It stretched as far as Piazza Noce. However during the first half of the 20th century urban sprawl dramatically reduced its size. During World War II the AGIP company acquired the area. They installed large underground fuel tanks. This was to keep fuel supplies away from the port.

Parco Uditore’s history has a darker side. For a time it was rumored to be where Salvatore Riina lived. The land belonged to the Sicilian Regional Government. The Forest Service managed it. Plans for a large government office building were drafted.

But then a movement began. Starting in 2010 local people started a campaign. They collected signatures. This effort pushed for a change in the urban plan. The goal was to create a park. The plan succeeded. Work began in January 2012. University students designed the park. Volunteers from a newly formed association helped build it. They even organized guided tours. Parco Uditore opened to the public on October 15 2012.

The park is truly remarkable. It covers over 9 hectares. That makes it Palermo’s third largest urban park. Its creation moved Palermo up the rankings of Italian cities with the most green spaces. It lies between Via Uditore Via Cimabue and Viale della Regione Siciliana.

The Parco Uditore offers something for everyone. There is an outdoor gym a dog park and a children’s playground. There are areas for trees and plants. Citizens and associations donated hundreds of trees. On February 18 2012 the park was twinned with St James’s Park in London.

The park’s management is impressive. A cooperative runs it. They organize free events. These events help pay for maintenance without using public funds. There are activities for children young people and adults. Mountain biking and organic markets are examples of events. Private sponsors also help support the park.

Today Parco Uditore is a beloved community space. It’s a symbol of urban renewal. It showcases what’s possible through community activism. It is a testament to the power of people coming together. This transformed a forgotten space into a green lung for Palermo. Come explore this incredible park. Discover its history. Feel the joy it brings.
