Deep within the Stadtwald forest, a solemn monument stands. This is the Burmeister-Denkmal, a memorial dedicated to Richard Burmeister, a city forester. In the stillness of the forest, it’s easy to imagine the events of that fateful night in March 1920. Burmeister, dedicated to his duty, was patrolling the forest. He was ambushed and shot, likely by a poacher. Despite medical care, he succumbed to his injuries on May 17, 1920, at the hospital. The Burmeister-Denkmal was unveiled four years later, on May 17, 1924. A marble plaque on the memorial commemorates Burmeister’s life and tragic death. It reads, “In memory of the dutiful city forester Richard Burmeister, a victim of cowardly treachery *30. July 1865 † 17. May 1920.” The monument serves not just as a memorial, but as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who protect our natural world. A reward of 3,000 marks was offered, but the perpetrator was never brought to justice. The Burmeister-Denkmal stands as a testament to his dedication and the unsolved mystery surrounding his death.
