The Monument to the Carabinieri is also called Monumento alla Fiamma dei Carabinieri. This translates to Monument to the Flame of Carabinieri. Luciano Minguzzi created this striking piece between 1911 and 2004. It pays tribute to the Carabinieri. They are Italy’s national gendarmerie.
Minguzzi was commissioned in 1972. The monument was unveiled on December 3 1981. Giovanni Spadolini was present. He was then President of the Milan City Council. Carabinieri General Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa also attended.
The sculpture’s design is inspired by the Carabinieri’s heraldic symbol. This symbol is a flame on their caps. It is not just a flame. It is an artistic depiction of a grenade. His main target was the Red Brigades. Tragically, the Mafia ambushed and assassinated him. His wife and their driver also died. This happened when he was appointed Prefect of Palermo.
