Nestled amidst the vibrant tapestry of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, lies the captivating neighborhood of I’On. I’On stands as a testament to the innovative vision of New Urbanism. It seamlessly blends residential charm with commercial convenience. I’On’s story begins in the mid-1990s. A group of developers envisioned a community that broke away from conventional suburban sprawl. They sought to create a place where homes, businesses, and green spaces coexisted harmoniously. I’On, named after a prominent figure in the area’s history, Jacob Bond I’On, was designed with meticulous care. The planners, Dover, Kohl & Partners and Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, drew inspiration from traditional neighborhood designs. They crafted a community that prioritized walkability, community interaction, and a respect for the natural environment. The development of I’On, however, was not without its challenges. Initial plans faced opposition, leading to a legal battle that ultimately reached the South Carolina Supreme Court. The court ruled in favor of the I’On Company, paving the way for this unique neighborhood to take shape. I’On emerged as one of the earliest New Urbanist communities in the United States. Its charming streets, lined with architecturally diverse homes, wind through a landscape dotted with parks, lakes, and canals. The community boasts a variety of amenities, including a Montessori school, a boutique hotel, and a vibrant commercial district. I’On also holds a unique distinction in South Carolina. It’s home to the first public charter Montessori school in the state, the East Cooper Montessori Charter School. The heart of I’On lies in its strong sense of community. Residents actively participate in the I’On Homeowners Association. They come together for events, festivals, and celebrations. This close-knit atmosphere fosters a true sense of belonging. I’On stands as a shining example of how thoughtful planning and community engagement can create a place that is not just beautiful but also deeply fulfilling.
