Our doors are now closed. Yet our mission endures. This is the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in San Antonio. For fifty years this church served its community. It touched countless lives. It helped feed the hungry. It strengthened community bonds. Now its legacy continues through other congregations.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church wasn’t always here in this location. The story began in 1961. A Sunday school started in a VFW hall. Then a charter was opened. 139 members signed it. Prince of Peace was born. The congregation moved to a Methodist church. They laid a cornerstone for their first building. They held a dedication service. This building wasn’t their final home.
Over the years the church grew. They added more buildings. They added education and music facilities. They even added a library. It was named the Klos Library. It’s a lighthouse of learning. They named it after Sally Klos and Pastor Frank Klos. A covered walkway and a tower were later constructed. The church continuously adapted. It met the needs of its growing congregation.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church also served as a place of worship. Many pastors served its people. Reverend James A Skelton Jr. served from 1961-1964. Richard H Mintel served next. Then Richard W Overcash. Joyce A Seip Patricia S Ireland Frank W Klos Jr. Timothy L Taylor Ingrid A Fath David Stoner Elijah Mwitanti and Brett W Ballenger each added to this community’s faith journey. These people guided the church. They helped shape its identity.
Prince of Peace embraced change and growth. They even became a Reconciling in Christ congregation. This shows their commitment to inclusivity and acceptance. Their dedication extended beyond their walls. They partnered with organizations. They tackled community challenges. They promoted social well-being. They truly lived their name Prince of Peace. They worked to bring peace to those around them.
Although the building itself is closed its spirit lives on. The impact of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church resonates still. It’s a testament to faith community and lasting legacy. The church’s work continues. It lives in the hearts of those who were touched by it. Their mission of peace and service will always be remembered.
