Could a yeshiva ever be accused of fraud? What sounds unbelievable at first is linked to the history of Yeshivat Itri. Yeshivat Itri stands before us, an Orthodox institution founded in the heart of Jerusalem in 1968. This yeshiva, a place known for its deep dive into Torah study, was established by Rabbi Mordechai Elefant. He envisioned a space dedicated to nurturing scholars and fostering a love for Jewish learning. Over the years, Yeshivat Itri flourished and expanded its reach, even establishing branches across Israel and the United States. But its journey has not been without a touch of controversy. In 1999, a shadow fell over the institution with allegations of financial misconduct. Rabbi Chaim Weiss, the yeshiva administrator at the time, and businessman David Appel found themselves under scrutiny. They were suspected of embezzling a staggering NIS 9 million from Yeshivat Itri’s funds. While the investigation stretched on for years, the scandal sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. This event, though unfortunate, serves as a reminder that even institutions dedicated to spiritual growth are not immune to the complexities of human nature. Despite this chapter, Yeshivat Itri continues to be a beacon of Jewish education, attracting students from all walks of life eager to deepen their understanding of Torah and tradition.
