Calvary Foursquare Church wasn’t always here. Its roots stretch back to 1941. Rev Ralph Barber a Californian felt a divine calling. He began open-air services on a vacant lot. Imagine the dust the sun the sheer faith needed to begin a church in the fledgling Las Vegas.
From that humble beginning the church grew. In 1942 Barber built a permanent structure himself. This small building at 318 S 11th Street became the center of a growing community. The church’s early years were marked by a tireless spirit. The building was expanded in 1952 to meet the expanding congregation’s needs.
The church’s journey continued. In the 1960s it moved to Cedar Avenue and 30th Street. This move was significant. The name changed to Calvary Foursquare Church a reflection of its evolving identity and mission. The building expanded again adding classrooms a gymnasium and a meeting hall. This demonstrates the unwavering dedication of its members. The church even ran Clark County Christian School throughout the 1970s.
Through the decades Calvary Foursquare Church served as more than a place of worship. It fostered community provided education and extended a helping hand. Smaller congregations branched out from it spreading its influence across Southern Nevada.
The 21st century saw more changes. The church’s name became Solid Rock. The school closed. The church moved again to North Las Vegas finally finding a temporary home at Canyon Springs High School. The new name NorthGate Christian Church embodies the church’s welcoming spirit and its ongoing journey. A new building was planned demonstrating the church’s enduring commitment to Las Vegas.
Today Calvary Foursquare Church continues its legacy. It stands as a testament to perseverance faith and the enduring power of community.
