In the heart of Augsburg, Germany, a symphony of steel and steam awaits you at the Bahnpark Augsburg. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a living testament to the golden age of rail travel, a place where history comes to life with the hiss of steam and the clang of iron. Bahnpark Augsburg occupies a sprawling site, encompassing a former railway repair shop, complete with workshops, roundhouses, and a historic smithy.
Bahnpark Augsburg opened its doors to the public in 2009, built on the foundation of two grand roundhouses, or “Ringlokschuppen,” constructed in the early 1900s. Here, you’ll find the magnificent “Rundhaus Europa” – a roundhouse showcasing a stunning collection of historic locomotives from all over Europe. Imagine marveling at the French electric locomotive CC 6503 “Aquitaine,” or standing in awe of the Swiss electric locomotive Ae 4/7, affectionately nicknamed the “Gotthard Loco.” Each locomotive has a story to tell, whisking you away on a journey through the evolution of rail technology and design.
But Bahnpark Augsburg is much more than just a static display of iron horses. Step inside the steam locomotive halls, alive with the echoes of a bygone era. You can almost hear the clang of hammers on steel and see the glow of the forge in the historic smithy. Bahnpark Augsburg also houses an impressive collection of railway trolleys, once used by railway workers to inspect and maintain the tracks. Keep an eye out for the KLV 11 touring trolley, occasionally offering rides that are especially popular with children.
And as you wander through the halls, you’ll encounter a piece of industrial history – the Raupach steam engine. Built in 1911, this powerful machine, originally used in a brewery, then later in a distillery, has found a new life at Bahnpark Augsburg. Watch as it springs back to life, showcasing the ingenuity of a bygone era.
