In 1845 with the help of friends she established a shelter. This home offered refuge and rehabilitation to young women escaping prostitution. The initial venture faced challenges. Sadly a cholera epidemic claimed her life in 1865. She died a martyr of charity. Pope Pius XI canonized her in 1934.
