A beacon of faith amidst the vibrant tapestry of New Orleans, Christian Mission Baptist Church has a story to tell. Originally named Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, its journey began on April 11, 1976. A dedicated group, led by the late Sister Lillian Johnson, gathered to establish a new spiritual home. The church was officially sanctioned on May 7, 1976, under the guidance of the First District Missionary Baptist Association. Rev. Moses S. Gordon II was chosen to lead the congregation as their pastor. Christian Mission Baptist Church first held services at the Claiborne-Jones Temple at 8708 Willow Street. They then moved to a permanent location at 2801 & 2809 General Taylor Street in July 1977. Even a devastating event like Hurricane Katrina in 2005 couldn’t extinguish the church’s spirit. Despite significant damage to their Prytania Street sanctuary, the congregation persevered. They held services at First African Baptist Church until tragedy struck again in January 2011 when a fire destroyed that building. Christian Mission Baptist Church demonstrated their resilience once more. They returned to their roots at 2809 General Taylor Street in a newly built edifice on August 4, 2013. This marked a full circle moment, bringing them back to the community they served and loved.
