Standing here at the Mastery Charter School – Thomas Campus, you wouldn’t know that this building has a really cool, albeit sometimes a bit darker, history. The building was originally the George C. Thomas Junior High School, named after a man who was an integral part of financing the Civil War. He was a banking-house partner of Jay Cooke and Company. The original high school was built in 1920 and has been around for a century. This very spot is where many thousands of neighborhood children, including some big names in entertainment, got their education. Some of them grew up to become actors and singers, like James Darren and Fabian, each popular during their time. Not just fame, but success across the board, including success in more traditional academic pursuits, is what the building hosted for so long. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Today, this building continues to be a vital part of South Philadelphia, a neighborhood brimming with energy and history.
