But the early 20th century brought a change. The establishment of federal military bases improved the harbor greatly. Mayor John P Grace spearheaded a revival. The city bought the Charleston Terminal Company. This secured most of the peninsula’s waterfront. In 1942 the South Carolina Legislature established the South Carolina Ports Authority. Its mission was to boost waterborne commerce for the state.

Today the Port of Charleston is a powerhouse. In 2020 it ranked sixth in the US for cargo value. Over $72 billion in goods passed through its docks. All the world’s major container carriers use this port. The South Carolina Ports Authority invested over a billion dollars in new and existing facilities between 2016 and 2020. This included the Hugh K Leatherman Terminal. Upgrades included technology and two inland ports. A harbor deepening project created the deepest harbor on the East Coast. It reaches depths of 52 feet.

The Port of Charleston also plays a crucial role in cruise ship operations. It aims to increase maritime commerce. A study predicted that cruise operations could boost the local economy by $37 million and create 407 jobs in 2010. The port has hosted various cruise ships including the Carnival Fantasy and the Carnival Sunshine. The Union Pier Terminal handles cruise ships along with other commodities.
