“Ninety people. Can you imagine that many people packed into a TAFE College for the first Bracken Ridge Baptist Church service?” I ask. That was back in 1980. A momentous occasion marking the beginning of this very church you see before you.
Bracken Ridge Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith dedication and community spirit. From humble beginnings as a Sunday school in 1968 it blossomed into a fully-fledged church in 1983. The dedicated volunteers and pastors poured their hearts into building this place of worship.
Think about it. The land on Norris Road was purchased in 1972 by Nundah and Sandgate churches. A vision for outreach in Bracken Ridge. But it took eight years of planning and hard work before that first service. That’s perseverance. That’s faith in action.
The church family yearned for their own building. Their persistence paid off. Construction started in 1985. The new building opened in December 1986. A Christmas miracle if you will.
The growth was incredible. Membership skyrocketed. More services were added. Extensions became necessary. Amalgamations with other churches like Brighton Baptist Church in 1994 expanded their reach and influence. Through several pastors’ dedicated leadership including Ted Brett John Sweetman Brent Sweeney and Dan Lyons Bracken Ridge Baptist Church thrived. Each contributed unique vision and energy.
The church faced challenges like the COVID-19 lockdowns. They adapted. They embraced online services. But their mission remained unchanged: to experience and share the life freedom and hope found in Jesus.
The building itself has seen renovation too. Upgrades were made to meet community standards. To improve its functionality as a meeting space for the many groups that use it every week.
So here we stand today. Before Bracken Ridge Baptist Church a place of prayer community service and shared faith. A place that has witnessed decades of growth change and unwavering commitment. A story etched not only in concrete and wood but in the hearts of countless individuals.
