In 1809, a group of fifteen forward-thinking men laid the groundwork for what would become the Second Presbyterian Church of Charleston. They saw the burgeoning congregation at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church and realized a new space was needed. The Second Presbyterian Church, completed in 1811, stands as a testament to their vision. This magnificent structure, located at 342 Meeting Street, cost a hefty $100,000, a substantial sum in those days. Unlike many Charleston churches nestled close to the street, Second Presbyterian Church sits back from the road. A small park graces its front. This unique setting is due to the church’s location in “upper” Charleston, where land was more plentiful. The church’s story is intertwined with the city’s history, including the Civil War. Remarkably, the church emerged from the conflict relatively unscathed. Its location placed it out of range of the cannon fire from the blockading ships. The Second Presbyterian Church holds the distinction of being the fourth oldest church in Charleston. The church has faced its share of challenges. A fire in the spire required extensive repairs and scaffolding that enveloped the building for two years. Yet, it stands tall, a testament to its resilience. Its Jeffersonian style, designed by brothers James and John Gordon, remains a striking feature of the Charleston cityscape. Inside, the sanctuary has undergone renovations, notably after a fire in 1959. Despite these setbacks, Second Presbyterian Church continues to serve its community. It offers a quiet respite from the bustling city and a connection to Charleston’s rich past.
