Gazing upon Dry Dock 4, can you sense the echoes of maritime history? This unassuming structure at the Charleston Naval Shipyard holds tales of wartime production and echoes of a bygone era. Dry Dock 4, completed in 1943, played a crucial role during World War II. The Charleston Naval Shipyard, bustling with activity, saw peak employment reach nearly 26,000 workers in 1943. Dry Dock 4, along with its twin, Dry Dock 3, supported this massive effort. They measured 365 feet 10 inches in length and 107 feet 4 inches in width. Their concrete and sheet pile construction provided a sturdy platform for vital ship repair and maintenance. Though not as large as the granite and concrete Dry Dock 1 or the later Dry Dock 5, these docks played an indispensable role. After the war, the shipyard’s focus shifted. Dry Dock 4 became part of a critical mission, supporting the repair and alteration of captured German submarines. This marked a new chapter in the dock’s history, transitioning from wartime construction to post-war analysis and innovation. The arrival of the submarine USS Conger in August 1948 solidified Dry Dock 4’s role in this new era of naval operations. Today, as you stand before Dry Dock 4, now part of Detyens Shipyards, imagine the tireless workers, the innovative engineers, and the silent submarines that graced its waters. It stands as a testament to Charleston’s rich naval heritage and the enduring legacy of the Charleston Naval Shipyard.
