Can you imagine the echoes of cannon fire here at El Reducto Bastion? This seemingly quiet spot in Getsemaní once stood as a vital defensive point for Cartagena. El Reducto Bastion wasn’t just any fortification. It was the first defensive structure built in the Getsemaní neighborhood. That makes it historically significant. It protected Cartagena from pirates and corsairs. It also served as a crucial part of the city’s defenses. El Reducto Bastion guarded the entrance to the Surgidero. It worked in tandem with the Fort of San Sebastián del Pastelillo.

El Reducto Bastion had quite the journey. It was once known by other names such as the Bastion of San Lázaro or San Lorenzo. Governor Francisco de Murga oversaw its construction around 1631. He wasn’t just focused on defense though. The governor also wanted to curb the illegal smuggling. This was a major economic problem for Cartagena. Smugglers would often use the bay to get goods into the city. El Reducto Bastion aimed to control this.

This wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. El Reducto Bastion’s construction involved skilled engineers. Italian military engineers designed the structure. Spanish financiers provided the funding. The physical labor fell on thousands of enslaved Africans. Their sweat and toil shaped this powerful fortress. El Reducto Bastion was a symbol of that era’s harsh realities.

For centuries El Reducto Bastion held its ground. It withstood countless sieges and attacks. In 1697 Baron de Pointis’s fleet bombarded the city. From El Reducto Bastion one of the enemy’s bomb ships was sunk. During the fight for independence El Reducto Bastion played a crucial role. In 1815 it withstood an assault by Spanish troops under Pablo Morillo. It later facilitated the escape of the Governing Junta. In 1821 the bastion fell to José Prudencio Padilla’s forces during the heroic night assault.

The years weren’t kind. El Reducto Bastion suffered from neglect and decay. Parts were demolished to make way for modernization projects. The construction of the Román Bridge for instance significantly altered its position. A “Gota de Leche” a charitable initiative providing nourishment to underprivileged children once stood here. Even a statue of the Virgin of Carmen stood atop the bastion for a time. Later it was restored. Now El Reducto Bastion stands as a testament to Cartagena’s resilience and its rich history. It’s a reminder of the city’s past struggles and triumphs. You can feel the weight of history here. It’s a silent guardian offering a glimpse into Cartagena’s captivating past.
