Did the Bustleton United Methodist Church rise from the ashes, not once, but twice? Let’s uncover the story of this resilient church, right here in the heart of Bustleton. Bustleton United Methodist Church’s tale begins in 1827, in the humble home of Daniel and Jane Starkey. Methodists gathered here, laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the community. By 1833, their devotion manifested into a physical structure at Bustleton Avenue and Welsh Road. Bustleton United Methodist Church officially took root. Tragedy struck in 1866 when fire ravaged the building. Yet, the congregation’s spirit remained unbroken. A new church arose, a testament to their unwavering faith. Decades later, in 1944, another devastating fire tested their resolve. Again, the Bustleton United Methodist Church community rallied. A new cornerstone was laid between Lott and Fulmer Streets, marking the church’s rebirth. The records of Bustleton United Methodist Church, spanning from 1859 to 2010, are preserved at the Historical Society of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. These documents, including membership rolls, vital records, meeting minutes, and historical materials, whisper tales of baptisms, marriages, funerals, and the daily life of this enduring congregation. Though the physical Bustleton United Methodist Church was discontinued around 2010, its story echoes through time, a testament to the power of faith and community in the face of adversity.
