The Cigar Factory began its life in 1882, not as a place for crafting cigars, but as the state-of-the-art Cotton Mill of Charleston. At its peak, the factory churned out an astounding 1.5 million cigars daily. It played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement. In 1945, the factory became the site of a historic strike. This strike, lasting over five months, gave rise to the anthem “We Shall Overcome,” a song that would become a powerful symbol of hope and resilience in the struggle for equality.
